Amaryllis ‘Alfresco’

Mother Nature has been in a gloomy mood lately, so the lighting conditions have not been ideal for photography. Thankfully the amaryllis I want to show you today is white, so you have a pretty good idea what it would look like in the sunshine.

Amaryllis ‘Alfresco’ grows only 14 inches tall with 7-inch-wide fluffy, double-white flowers that have a green eye. My plant did indeed top out at 14 inches, and so far it has one scape with five flowers on it. Another scape is peeking out from the top of the bulb.

The flowers are gorgeous. My only complaint is that the plant is a heavy leaner. The day after the first flower opened I discovered the scape tilted at almost a 45-degree angle away from the window. Yes, it’s been dreary out lately, but ‘Alfresco’ should at least be able to figure out that the sun is coming from the opposite direction.

Once I staked ‘Alfresco’ it started to stand up a little straighter. If you grow this cultivar, just make sure you stake it or keep your eye on it so it doesn’t topple over.

I don’t usually get excited about white-flowering plants, but the huge double flowers on ‘Alfresco’ are truly a sight to behold.
