People who tell you that Nicotiana (flowering tobacco) flowers are fragrant are “Liar McLiarsons” but I still love these plants because they are hummingbird magnets.
I’ve grown more than a half-dozen different nicotiana cultivars over the years and not a single one has ever given off even the slightest whiff of a sweet scent. Maybe it’s something that can only be detected by bees and hummingbirds, or maybe I just can’t sniff at that frequency. I also can’t smell skunk even if I’m standing over a dead carcass—true fact.
The cultivar I’ve grown most often in the last couple of years is ‘Daylight Sensation’ which grows 30 to 36 inches tall and makes a nice back-of-the-border plant.
The flowers come in shades of red, pink, purple, lavender and white and I purposely plant a bunch right next to my screen porch every year so I can watch the hummingbirds flit around the flowers with their buzzy wings in the evenings.
