Lavender Mist Meadow Rue

‘Lavender Mist’ Meadow Rue plants (Thalictrum rochebrunianum) are easy to grow but nearly impossible to photograph because the plants are almost see-through.

There are some cultivars that only grow 3 or 4 feet tall but the species plants grow about 6 feet tall and much taller. This year a couple of my plants are 10 feet tall (you can see them towering over the 6-foot lilies in the photo below).

Meadow Rue plants prefer dappled sun but they will survive happily just about anywhere if you remember to water them during dry spells. Because they are so thin and airy you can plant them anywhere—in the middle in the back or even in the front of a flowerbed.

The delicate pink flowers start appearing in July, and bumblebees go nuts for them.

I sometimes have to stake my plants because they get so incredibly tall that they are susceptible to tipping over in in thunderstorm winds. And for the last couple of years baby meadow rue plants have self-seeded and sprouted near the parent plants. I’ve been transplanting them to different flowerbeds.

Lavender Mist Meadow Rue plants are hardy in Zones 3-7
