Mother Nature continues to confound. On Saturday the high was 26 degrees below normal—I could see my breath when I filled the bird feeders! And more than 5 inches of rain has fallen in the last 7 days.
Not much is blooming out there, so I feel sorry for the critters including the Ruby-throated Hummingbird I spotted zooming around our yard yesterday and the bees and other insects that rely on flower pollen and nectar.
Spring bulbs are finishing up their abbreviated season, but the alliums haven’t opened yet (they’re late!) and while the rest of my perennials are growing like gangbusters in all the rain, nothing else is blooming yet except my grandma’s old-fashioned bleeding heart which I have growing in a half-dozen place throughout the yard.
I did find one lucky bumblebee hanging from the flowers last night after supper.
