In May I discovered that some salvia plants that I grew as annuals last year managed to survive winter. That’s a pretty neat trick when I easily lost 100 established perennials. I almost pulled the plants this spring when I was cultivating because I thought they were weeds, but then I noticed them growing a perfect row. Thankfully weeds haven’t gotten quite that sophisticated yet.
Because Salvia ‘Purple Fairy Tale’ got a head start on all my other seedlings, the plants are already big and bushy and they’ve just started blooming.
The plant is very attractive to bees and butterflies. If we could ever pull together a stretch of sunny days, I might even see some of those pollinators!
‘Purple Fairy Tale’ grows 18 to 24 inches tall. It prefers full sun, but it’s thriving in part-sun conditions in my yard.
