I’ll Try Again Next Year

I have about one-quarter of the Oriental, Orienpet and LA Hybrid lilies I started with a few years ago. Two late snowstorms in April wiped out many of them. My flowerbeds still had frozen soil in some spots in mid-May.

Lilies start peeking out of the ground in late April and early May, so they got zapped by snowstorms and all that freezing and thawing when they were the most vulnerable.

Some of my cultivars survived, and I’m hoping others that died back were doing magical things underground over the summer and will come back and surprise me next spring.

I intended to order some replacement bulbs to plant this fall, but the soil in my flowerbeds has been very wet for about 2 months now (and we continue to get more rain). I didn’t want to spend the money on new bulbs that could rot away before they ever bloomed.

I’ll try again next year instead.
