Petunias can usually withstand a couple of frosts. Until the nighttime temperature dips below 26-28 degrees (F) petunias will hang in there. I have some growing in a barrel near my dryer vent. They look better right now than they did throughout most of our wet summer.
Marigolds usually croak on me after a frost, but these ‘Strawberry Blonde’ Marigolds are still going strong, and they aren’t even growing in a protected location:
