Seeds Already?

We’ve barely put the flowerbeds to sleep for the winter (okay I haven’t done ANY OF THAT yet), so it’s hard to believe that in just 6 weeks it will be time to take advantage of the Black Friday free shipping opportunities. I need to start preparing next year’s seed-starting list already because the seed catalogs will start arriving in just a few weeks.

It was a weird growing season in my backyard because of my little rabbit repellent incident back in June. My flowers had a major setback and peaked much later than usual. In fact the tall zinnias seemed to reach their stride in early September this year rather than in early August. Rabbits decimated many of my annuals—especially the marigolds—and it was also another very wet year so some of my plants had disease issues.

Every year I think I’m outsmarting mother nature or the garden critters by choosing to grow some plants over others, but they always get the last laugh, and I find myself facing a new challenge I didn’t expect.

But that’s what makes gardening unexpected and fun.
