Sometimes designing a daylily bed can be a complete guessing game. You have to figure out which flowers might look good together based on photos or pictures in a catalog. And since there are early, mid-season and late-blooming daylilies, you also have to guess which ones might flower at the same time.
I usually print out a photo sheet of my new plants and bring it with me to the planting area so I can take a stab at planting complementary colors together. So far it’s worked out pretty well.
For example, in one of my beds I planted ‘Indian Giver’ which is a purple daylily with a lavender edge:
I took a bet that it would look great next to the lovely lavender ‘Blueberry Breakfast’:
My bet paid off. They blend nicely and bloom at exactly the same time:
On the other side of ‘Indian Giver’ I planted a salmon-colored daylily with a purple eyezone called ‘Wineberry Candy’ (the official color is listed as orchid but I just don’t see it). I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the two flowers next to one another. ‘Wineberry Candy’s’ eye is almost the exact color of ‘Indian Giver’:
Finally, I added the cream-colored ‘Beautiful Edgings’ next to ‘Wineberry Candy’. When they first bloomed I was a little worried, but I think there’s just enough rose color on the fringes of ‘Beautiful Edgings’ that the two can peacefully coexist.
