The tomato I’m most impressed with this year is ‘Wisconsin 55’, an heirloom, indeterminate plant that was bred at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the 1940s (my alma mater, but a little before my time!)
Of all the tomatoes I sprouted from seed, the ‘Wisconsin 55’ plants were the healthiest and most vigorous. I planted one in my garden and another in a large pot.
While other heirloom tomato plants can produce fruits that look like something aliens brought to earth or a scientific experiment gone very wrong, ‘Wisconsin 55’ tomatoes are beautiful, uniform, bright-red beauties. I’ve had no spots, no cracking and no green shoulders.
‘Wisconsin 55’ has a wonderful sweet tomato taste and makes a great all-around tomato for canning, cooking or eating fresh.
