In April I had a pandemic panic and decided I wanted to grow some vegetables this summer. I usually stick to flowers. There weren’t a lot of seed choices by mid-April because most of the country had the same thought I did. I snapped up some seeds for tomatoes, beans and Swiss chard, and then decided to throw in a couple of summer squash. I haven’t grown any since 2009 when I sprouted some in a pot on my patio.
This is ‘Bossa Nova’ which is a 2015 All American Selections (AAS) Edible Vegetable Award Winner.
I thought these squash looked handsome in the photos, and they didn’t disappoint. They are light green with darker-green splotches.
AAS judges described the taste as sweet and mild. Honestly I haven’t eaten a garden-grown zucchini since 2009, so I have nothing recent to compare ‘Bossa Nova’ to, but the taste is pleasant. I’ve roasted slices, and I’ve and spiralized and sauteed some of these zukes as well.
‘Bossa Nova’ spreads about 4 feet, and you can harvest the fruit about a month to 6 weeks after sowing seeds in the ground or in a pot.
