The very last amaryllis cultivar to bloom for me this season—12 weeks after it was potted up—is ‘Red Lion’.
This is another flower that it so screaming-red that any type of camera struggles to bring it into focus.
‘Red Lion’ has sent up one scape so far that topped out at 17 inches tall. I’m a little disappointed that it only has 2 velvety flowers at the top, but they are 7 inches across and incredibly eye-catching—especially in sunlight.
A second scape is barely peeking out from the bulb. Most of my second scapes have grown much taller than the first, so we’ll see if that’s the case with ‘Red Lion.’ If it offers more flowers than just 2, I may consider growing this cultivar again.
