If I could only grow one type of flower in my yard, it would be Orienpet lilies. These are a cross between an Oriental lily and a trumpet lily and they grow on sturdy stems with HUGE blooms.
They are borderline winter hardy here (most, if not all, are listed hardy in Zones 5-9), but I find it worth the risk because if they do survive winter, they come back stronger year after year.
You can smell Oriental lilies from across the yard on a humid day, and Orienpets have kept some of that fragrance from their parent plants, but it’s not as overpowering.
Orienpets come in more shades than Oriental lilies (yellow and orange shades are available!):
And they can grow anywhere from 3 feet to 12 feet tall depending on the cultivar, although most stay within the 4 to 6-foot range.
Some of my favorite cultivars include ‘Flashpoint’, ‘Corcovado’, and ‘Sweetheart’.
My only complaint is that these bulbs don’t bloom all summer!
