I planted all of my amaryllis bulbs in pots in early November. These two are the last to bloom (although both bulbs also bloomed in January).
‘Red Lion’ and ‘Merry Christmas’ are almost exactly the same bright-red color, but ‘Red Lion’ has smaller flowers this go-around (last time it bloomed they were 7 inches, now they are 5 inches).
And ‘Merry Christmas’ has 7-inch flowers (last time they were 8 inches):
‘Merry Christmas’ was a bit of a mess the first time it bloomed, and I wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about—it’s a well-rated cultivar. It only reached 8 inches tall and then tried to cram 4 blooming flowers into that tiny space. They weren’t happy and they didn’t last very long.
But this time around it grew 22 inches tall and the flowers had plenty of room to spread out.
When ‘Red Lion’ bloomed for the first time last month, it was skimpy on the flowers with only two. This time there are four.
You never know what you’re going to get when an amaryllis blooms, which is why I don’t like to judge them until I’ve seen them send up at least 2 scapes.
I’ve really enjoyed having these lovely flowers to admire in my window every day for the last 4 months.
