Festival hyacinths look a little more laid back than the hyacinths most of us see in the garden centers and growing outside in the spring. There’s more space between the florets on each stem.
I forced ‘Blue Festival’ indoors over winter and it just started blooming this week. The flowers are a bluish-purple tinged with white.
These hyacinths grow 8 to 12 inches tall and have the same lovely fragrance as the regular Hyacinthus orientalis cultivars we’re more used to seeing.
Outside the bulbs can be planted 6 inches deep and apart in fall for spring bloom. They prefer full to part-sun and are hardy in Zones 4-8.
