Amsonia A. tabernaemontana (willow blue star), is a tough North American native plant with little blue, star-shaped flowers.
My plant didn’t do much the first year and then it got buried by an exuberant bee balm, but last year it made a play for the front of the border where it could get more light.
Amsonias grow happily in part-shade or light shade. If you grow them in full sun you need to make sure they are consistently well-watered.
The plants can grow up to 3 feet tall, but mine has been too busy fighting off other perennials to achieve that kind of altitude. Those little blue flowers appear in late spring and early summer.
Amsonia plants are also known for their rich, golden color in the fall. Amsonia willow blue star is hardy in Zones 3-9.
