I purchased shrub rose ‘Midnight Blue’ in mid-summer last year. The plant was on sale for 40% off, but what really tempted me was the color. The blooms appear royal purple or rich purple depending on whether the sun is shining on them or not:
‘Midnight Blue’ is a 2005 introduction that grows about 2 feet tall with excellent branching. It’s also fragrant.
‘Midnight Blue’ survived winter just fine in my Zone 5 garden (although to be fair it was safely insulated by a gazillion inches of snow). It’s supposed to be an impressive bloomer, and so far it’s living up to its reputation. My plant has been flowering like crazy and is still covered in buds.
