When I think of richly-colored perennials, Salvia ‘May Night’ immediately comes to mind. This 1997 Perennial Plant of the Year is very easy to grow and stays in a nice, well-behaved mound. The plant reaches 18-24 inches tall and will bloom for weeks in the summer. It will continue to rebloom if you remove the spent flowers.
‘May Night’ prefers full sun, but I grow my plant in partial sun without any problems. The flowers are always covered with busy bumblebees.
‘May Night’s’ rich, purple-blue spikes blend well with just about any other flowers in the garden. This year I’m trying some next to my bright orange and yellow butterfly weeds. It should be quite a show.
