In 2018 I wrote a post about a daylily that seemed to come out of nowhere. I have no record of purchasing it and I didn’t have any photos of it in my daylily photo collection.
I’m either losing my mind, this daylily doesn’t bloom every year, or it doesn’t have a lot of blooms and I must miss the show some summers because it surprised me again this year!
When ‘Big Sur’ bloomed this summer I just assumed it was one of the new cultivars I purchased last summer. The flowers are a gorgeous medium rose-pink with a yellow throat.
The scapes reach 30 inches tall on this daylily, and the flowers are big—6.5″ across and fragrant.
Unfortunately, back in July when I took this photo I didn’t pay attention to where the plant is growing. And I have 400+ daylilies growing in my backyard so it would be difficult to find it now that most of them are done for the season.
There’s a good chance ‘Big Sur’ is going to surprise me again in a year or two!
