When Amaryllis ‘Aphrodite’ first opened earlier this week I was very underwhelmed, but it turns out I was just a little too impatient—there were still several layers of petals that needed to open. It’s actually quite lovely once the flowers are showing off their fully double selves.
‘Aphrodite’ grows 18-24 inches tall with white flowers that have reddish-pink brushmarks on the petals.
If I had one complaint it would be that so far my bulb has only sent up one scape with 3 blooms on it. I’m sure doubles probably have fewer blooms because there wouldn’t be enough room to cram all those petals at once, but sitting next to ‘Aphrodite’ in my bay window is double ‘Arctic Nymph’ with 6 flowers on the first scape and another already peeking out of the bulb.
The flowers are large—8 inches across. If you can’t decide between red or white amaryllis cultivars, ‘Aphrodite’ is a nice compromise of both. I hope mine will send up a second flush of blooms.
