Spring Has Sprung (from the Refrigerator)

Last weekend I pulled the first 6 pots of forcing bulbs out of the refrigerator. The shoots that are coming up from the soil always look alarmingly pale when they first come out into the light, but they quickly green up. They’ve been sitting in the refrigerator since mid-November.

I put the pots on the floor by a sunny window so they could get their wits about them before being exposed direct light. The hyacinths were so eager to get going that they grew about an inch overnight that first night, and they’ve added about an inch a day of growth since then.

And I need to dig out my bulb order because I have no idea what these are—species tulips? Or I could just let it be a surprise and find out when the flowers open!
