This year I started some impatiens from seed and tried two different mixes. This is ‘Xtreme Tango Mix’:
The colors include deep salmon, red, rose, scarlet, and violet, but the seeds I planted favored rose and scarlet.
I planted them in an area that gets direct sun in the morning for a few hours and then again in the late afternoon. I was afraid that would be too much sunlight, but they are quite happy—even though we’ve had several days in the mid 90s(F) this summer.
These impatiens grow 8 to 10 inches tall with 2.5″ blooms that attract hummingbirds. I also saw a Black Swallowtail butterfly sipping nectar from them.
I started my plants from seeds indoors in late February, and I did have some germination challenges, so I’m not sure if I’d grow this one again or find something similar at a garden center in the spring.
