Return of the Cardinal Flower

I used to have more Cardinal Flower plants (Lobelia cardinalis) growing in various parts of my yard, but they thrive in moist conditions, and it’s just been too dry for them for the last couple of years. I did have a couple of plants surprise me last summer.

This year I have at least 3 clumps blooming right now, so thankfully my plants didn’t die. Perhaps they just didn’t bloom those other summers, or bloomed and went to seed so quickly that I missed it.

These shrieking-red beauties grow 2-3 feet tall and prefer moist, well-drained soil.

Hummingbirds adore these perennials plants, and they are hardy in Zones 3-9.
