I had so much fun growing spring bulbs in my windowsill last winter, I decided to do it again.
I potted up bulbs in November and then stored them in an extra refrigerator at my husband’s office building for the last 12+ weeks. This time I potted up more hyacinths because I love their scent and because they don’t grow very tall, so they don’t flop over in their little pots.
This bloom is from the Hyacinth series Étouffée. The bulbs grow 8-10 tall in shades of pink and purple.
And I didn’t abandon tulips altogether, but I chose good forcing varieties. This is Sunny Prince (yellow) with Purple Prince.
These Single Early tulips grow 14 to 16 inches tall, and when planted outdoors they are hardy in Zones 3-8.
I filled a total of 18 pots, and we’re bringing them out of the refrigerator a few at a time, so if all goes well I should have blooms to admire in my windowsill well into March.
