Toward the end of our trip we had plans to stay in Aspen and Breckenridge, but the weather didn’t cooperate. A big storm system was moving in with very windy conditions and snow in the higher elevations. We thought it best to hightail it to lower ground.
The morning we left Grand Junction it was already being swallowed up by the storm. We scrapped our visit to the Colorado National Monument (too much lightning) and headed for Golden.
We did get to see both ends of a very bright rainbow:
High winds followed us the entire 4-hour drive to Golden. When we got to our hotel, we learned that not long after we’d made it throught a section of I-70, traffic screeched to a halt in both directions because of a large dust storm. There was also a 92 mph wind gust reported in one of the mountain passes we’d traveled through 2 days earlier. I’m thankful we missed out on both of those experiences!
