Some daylilies are described as fragrant, but unless you stick your nose into the petals it’s often hard to notice any scent. But I have one daylily that stops me in my tracks every time—‘Space Wars’.
This daylily is supposed to be a mid-season bloomer, but it’s usually the last of my 400+ daylilies to put on a show each season.
This is an older cultivar that was registered in 1981. The flowers are 6.5″ across and appear on 28-inch scapes. It won an American Hemerocallis Society Honorable Mention award in 1994.
I can detect the wonderful scent of this daylily from 10 feet away—especially on humid days. And the flowers are colorfast—even when the plant gets full sun on steamy afternoons.
‘Space Wars’ may be harder to find these days because it’s an older cultivar, but it would be a great plant to put under a window you open frequently or next to a screen porch so you can easily enjoy that lovely scent for several weeks each summer.
