‘Big Blue’ Shines in September

I grew ‘Big Blue’ salvia from seed for the first time 4 years ago, and I’ve continued to include this cultivar in my flowerbeds every summer since.

The electric blue-purple flowers are gorgeous, and hummingbirds love them. And because the plants start blooming in late August and really shine in September, they are an available nectar source for those fall migrating hummingbirds when many other annuals and perennials have already quit blooming for the year.

I sprout my plants indoors from seed each winter about 10 weeks before our last frost date in mid-May.

‘Big Blue’ salvias grow 2 to 3 feet tall and happily bloom in sun or even in partial shade. I’ve never had to stake my plants, and they’ve never had any disease or insect problems.
