First Look at Daylily ‘Beautiful People’

I mail-ordered daylily ‘Beautiful People’ last summer. The scapes reach 27 inches tall with 6-inch rose flowers that are supposed to be heavily edged in gold. The flowers my plant produced in its first year in my garden were rather ho hum, but in all fairness this daylily has been enduring dry/drought conditions since the day I planted it.

‘Beautiful People’ is a dormant daylily hybridized by Nate Bremer, and it’s one of the Solaris Farms’ Top Northern Tier (TNT) daylilies:

“Daylilies marked TNT must have shown good resistance to adverse climate conditions, which includes low/high temperatures, water in the environment (or lack of) and freeze thaw conditions. Flowers must be relatively consistent throughout the bloom season and bud counts need to be better than average. Good looking foliage and growth habits are also expected. We want our plants to look good without the assistance of specialized conditions. The plants need to look good in a clump, be showy in a garden setting and prosper over a long period without division.“

I’ve been very impressed with Bremer-bred daylilies, so I’m optimistic this one is just taking its sweet time getting established.

‘Beautiful People’ was registered in 2012, and it blooms in the middle of the daylily season.
