My friend and I stumbled into a wonderland of mushrooms during a hike at our favorite county park recently. It had rained 3 inches earlier that week and the first sign it was good mushroom-growing weather were the little splotches of white fungus scattered about the hiking trail.
We also spotted lots of mushrooms that had popped up from decaying leaf matter or from downed tree limbs.
But the biggest find was a grassy area with 5 giant (basket-ball-sized) puffball mushrooms peeking out!
I also spotted a spiny puffball mushroom. Often they are only a centimeter wide, so this one was an overachiever!
