Despite an extreme drought, it was another great summer for my cardinal flowers (Lobelia cardinalis). These plants like plenty of moisture, so I must have done a good job keeping my flowerbeds well-watered!
Cardinal flowers grow up to 4 feet tall and are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies. I like these perennials because they do well in part-shade or filtered sun, and you can’t miss that screaming-red color.
Cardinal flowers are part of the bluebell family. This perennial is a native plant in North, Central and South America, and the flowers appear later in the summer (July and August).
