‘Amadeus Candy’ is a fully double amaryllis with ruffly white petals brushed with pink. I grew this cultivar a couple of years ago and was very impressed by it. However I said at the time, “It’s always hard to know if a cultivar is special or if that particular bulb simply had everything it needed to put on a great show.” I’m still wondering.
This year’s ‘Amadeus Candy’ bulb sent up a stalk that topped out at 18 inches, but the second stalk that’s growing looks bigger and more ambitious. While the flowers are pretty, this time the performance from this cultivar is nothing to get excited about so far.
The 7-inch flowers are slightly upfacing, and the first stalk from my bulb had 4 blooms. ‘Amadeus Candy’ took about 12 weeks to flower from the time I potted it up in early November—that’s a few weeks longer than the rest of the cultivars I grew this winter.
As for bulbs in this color range—white with light pink accents—the gorgeous ‘Cherry Blossom’ is still my favorite this winter:
