The annual dianthus plants I sprouted from seed over the winter really gave me my money’s worth this growing season. They have bloomed for 5 months now!
I use the Jolt series dianthus in the middle of my annual beds. They grow 16 to 20 inches tall.
This is ‘Jolt Cherry’:
And for the back of the border, I grow the Amazon Neon dianthus plants. This is “Amazon Neon Rose Magic’ with it’s bi-colored pink and white blooms. The plants can get as tall as 36 inches, but mine usually top out at around 24 inches.
Both of these cultivars are disease resistant and rabbits ignore them. They’re a favorite of swallowtail butterflies.
Another bonus is that they’re just as happy in part-shade as in full sun and they can tolerate light frost.
