If you’re looking for a carefree, long-blooming perennial for your garden, consider Achillea ‘Coronation Gold’. Many perennials bloom for 5 or 6 weeks and then wind down, but ‘Coronation Gold’ continues blooming in my yard for up to 10 weeks.
‘Coronation Gold’ thrives in hot, dry conditions and prefers full sun. My plant grows just fine in partial shade, but sometimes I have to give it some support. Other than the occasional bout of powdery mildew toward the end of summer, my plant has never had any pest or disease problems. Another benefit of growing achilleas is that they attract beneficial insects to your garden such as lacewings and parasitic wasps.
‘Coronation Gold’ reaches 3 feet tall and grows in a sturdy, well-behaved clump. If I had only one complaint, it would be the mustard-colored flowers. It’s too bad that such a wonderful plant can’t produce flowers in a more interesting shade like rich red or purple. I’d even settle for pink.
