I’ve spotted the first mystery cultivar of the year. I planted what was supposed to be a ‘Peggy Sue’ Achillea in late April. ‘Peggy Sue’ blooms in “warm shades of yellow to gold.” Either I need a Kindergarten refresher course in colors, or this is not ‘Peggy Sue’:
Sometimes plant mix-ups are disappointing, but I’m completely enchanted with this one. I’ve been looking for a dark red Achillea for years. In fact, I used to consider my ‘Angelique’ Achillea flowers (pictured below) dark red until I got an eyeful of the the new kid on the block. Now ‘Angelique’ pales in comparison (so to speak):
If my new plant grows well I will eagerly use it throughout my flowerbeds. The dark color pairs well with purple and would look postively striking with yellow or gold flowers.
