A Surprise within a Surprise

Rudbeckia ‘Rustic Colors’ blooms in a variety of red, orange and golden shades. You’re never sure what you’ll get when the flowerbuds open.

But sometimes my plants go a step further and surprise me with flashy petals too:

These look beautiful! Can you tell me where you purchased the seed? James

Sure! I got them from Pinetree Garden Seeds:

I decided to buy the Rustic Colors Rudbeckia and Calendula Touch of Gold from Superseed (Pinetree) but since I’m from Canada I couldn’t get pass my address. I sent them an email and received a response to omit the zip code! I did that but the code was mandatory. Still didn’t get pass the mailing info. I could order through an email, but I am cautious about the security of my payment. I’m going to make another try tomorrow. Not only the colors, but also the shapes of the Rustics intrigued me. Couldn’t get through to Pinetree. Sent an email. Told me to phone them with the info. Their number is not toll free. Since I only wanted a packet of Touch of Red Calendula and Rustic Colours Rudbeckia, I decided to drop the issue. Pinetree has certainly changed from a few years back when I ordered seeds. James

Sorry that Pinetree was a bust for you. I wonder if that cultivar is on its way out. It’s rather difficult to find. I have no personal experience with this company, but after some online searching I discovered they are also selling ‘Rustic Colors.’ They say they ship to Canada and the U.S. for flat-rate $2.95 shipping (with a minimum $5 order).

Thank you for searching the new site. But last evening while looking through my seed I discovered a tiny plastic packet of Rustic Colors I received a couple of years ago with some seed I had ordered from eBay.ca. Hopefully the seed are still viable. I hadn’t tried them before (checked my seed sowing diary). Will try them this year and let you know the results. Now for the Touch of Red Calendula. James

Oh good, I’m glad you found some seeds. It looks like Stokes is selling ‘Touch of Red’ Calendula this year:
