Phlox drummondii

Every once in awhile I get the urge to sprout some annual phlox (Phlox drummondii) from seed. The flowers are available in many lovely solid colors (like Phlox ‘Scarlet’ pictured above) and bi-colors (like ‘Dwarf Diamond Mix’ pictured below).

The flowers are somewhat fragrant, especially when the weather is humid, and the plants are not bothered by pests. I don’t grow them regularly because they struggle in bad weather. A heavy rain or strong wind can cause the flowers to shatter.

Regardless of their sometimes fragile state, I can’t give up on them altogether. The flowers are just too pretty.
