Greigeii tulips (originally from Turkestan) look somewhat different than the common tulips you see blooming everywhere in the spring. Greigeii tulips are shorter and their blooms are usually a little more slender and pointed on top. Often the leaves are bi-colored or mottled.
The allure of Greigii tulips is that they naturalize well (meaning they return year after year). I grow ‘Professor de Monsseri’ which is red and yellow:
We’ve had numerous windy days in the last couple of weeks, but my flowers are still intact and thriving despite growing on a hill in a very exposed location.
‘Professor de Monsseri’ grows 12 inches tall and is hardy in zones 3-7.
