I was surprised how quickly my heucheras and heucherellas came to life in March during our freak “heatwave.” Last year after being buried in snow and ice for most of the winter, many of my plants struggled to look presentable until mid-June.
‘Solar Power’ is one of my newer charges. Most heucheras and heucherellas prefer shade to partial-sun or the leaves bleach out, but ‘Solar Power’ can theoretically handle full sun. I don’t know because I don’t have any full-sun areas in my yard. My plant is growing under an oak tree and gets sun in the morning and again in the late afternoon.
This heucherella adds some pizzazz to the garden because the leaves change color throughout the season. This is how the leaves on my plant appear now:
This is what they looked like late last summer:
‘Solar Power’ grows 12 inches tall and is hardy in Zones 4-9. Like other shade plants, heucheras and heucherellas prefer moist soil. They can survive in dry soil conditions if they are watered regularly.
