Holding Back

Some of my daylilies were a little stingy with the blooms this year. Even before the official drought set in this summer, April was very dry and that’s when the plants were deciding how many scapes to send up. I think some plants decided to play it safe.

I have two ‘Summer Wine’ daylilies growing in different locations in my yard and both bloomed sparingly this year.

I love ‘Summer Wine’ because there’s really no other color like it in the garden. I would describe it as lavender with flashes of hot pink and blue fighting it out behind the scenes (now you know why the American Hemerocallis Society has not hired me to write the official colors for their registered daylilies).

‘Summer Wine’ grows 24 inches tall with 6-inch blooms. This dormant daylily blooms in the middle of the daylily season and looks good with many colors in the garden like white, yellow and even orange (if you’re daring), but my favorite companion is purple. This is ‘Summer Wine’ growing next to a balloon flower.
