‘MinnRuby’

My ‘MinnRuby’ mums have been growing in my flowerbeds now for more than a decade.

Years ago it was very frustrating to grow mums because you never knew if they’d survive the winter. I’ve never winter-protected my ‘MinnRuby’ plants. We’ve had just about every kind of winter you can imagine in the last 10+ years and my plants have always popped up again in the spring. That’s because ‘MinnRuby’ is a University of Minnesota introduction that was bred for winter hardiness.

I’ve transplanted ‘MinnRuby’ a few times, but I don’t remember dividing any of my plants.

‘MinnRuby’ grows 14 inches tall with dark-red flowers and prefers full sun. The plants will still flower like crazy in lower-light conditions, but they tend to get a little floppy and need staking.
