It’s refreshing to discover a perennial that blooms for most of the summer. It’s even better when that perennial needs little care from me to “make the magic happen.”
Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) ‘Crazy Daisy’ is one of those perennials. I have two plants–both growing in partial sun. I used to think the “crazy” part of the plant’s name came from its bed-head-like frilly petals, but perhaps it has more to do with the crazy number of blooms the plant cranks out each summer.
‘Crazy Daisy’ begins blooming in June and continues flowering until sometime in August. Other than deadheading, the plants require no special care. I’ve never had any issues with insects or diseases attacking my plants. The fuzzy white flowers look great with any other flower colors.
The plants grow about 2 feet tall in full sun or partial-shade. ‘Crazy Daisy’ is hardy in Zones 5-9, but I’d be willing to bet that it could easily survive in a Zone 4 garden. My plants have endured many insane winter conditions in the last several years, yet they’ve popped up more robustly each spring.
‘Crazy Daisy’ is one of my favorite perennials to grow, and I can easily recommend it as a Garden Winner.
