A Preponderance of Produce

I’m still thrilled with our CSA shares, and I haven’t felt overwhelmed with produce like I feared I might (although we are splitting the shares with another household so maybe that’s why). We get a new box of organic vegetables every week.

Things were a little dicey in May and June when it was chilly and the only edibles growing happily were spinach, radishes, rhubarb and strange greens and nettles (that I mostly passed off to my best friend who isn’t afraid to cook/taste most anything).

Now that the weather has warmed up nicely I recognize everything in our CSA box. This week’s haul included broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, sweetheart cabbage, Boston lettuce, zucchini, carrots, new potatoes, arugula and sweet Spanish onions.

I’ve decided I really do adore the members of the onion family. Someone needs to offer a share with just onions, garlic, scallions, garlic scapes and ramps and I would be in heaven. I also wouldn’t mind a chocolate cake share as long as I’m placing my order.

Our organic fruit share arrives every other week, but we’ve been gobbling up the fruit fast. Over the last month we’ve received apricots, blueberries, mangoes, pixie tangerines, peaches, plums, pluots, nectarines, grapes and cherries.

This week we were surprised with avocados and limes (guacamole time!) and these cute little champagne grapes:

It won’t be long before the tomatoes and peppers start arriving and it’s a good thing because I’m not sure my plants are going to make it. My peppers started aborting their fruits last week when it got hot (even though I kept them well-watered), and my tomato plants are starting to show signs of late blight.

At least I will be able to enjoy peppers and tomatoes through my CSA share!
