If winter was rough in your area, you should check on your heucheras and heucherellas (and any other plants with roots that grow close to the soil surface). Heucheras are extremely susceptible to frost heave. I’ve already discovered a few of my plants with their roots sitting completely above-ground. When that happens you just nestle them back into the soil.
Heaved plants will continue to survive for a time, but the exposed roots are vulnerable to late spring frosts and freezes, and the plants will have trouble staying sufficiently hydrated once the temperatures really warm up.
I was expecting more carnage in my flowerbeds after such a frigid winter, but thankfully many of my perennials and shrubs are showing signs of life.
It’s supposed to rain every day this week (up to 3 inches), so I expect to see all kinds of garden surprises by this time next week.
