A daylily flower should have 3 petals and 3 sepals. When it has more, the flower is considered “polymerous.” The name used to be polytepal, but the American Hemerocallis Society changed it in 2008 after discovering the term was botanically incorrect.
Some polymerous blooms look pretty good like this ‘Ruby Spider’ flower which is flanking a normal flower. You can see there are 4 petals and 4 sepals instead of 3 each:
Once you hit 5 petals and sepals, things look a little more out of control. Here’s a polymerous flower from ‘Matthew Martin’:
Any daylily can kick out a polymerous flower from time to time, and it’s fun to spot them in your garden.
