When you grow lots of daylilies, you’re bound to end up with the wrong cultivar sooner or later. I had three this year but they were all pleasant surprises. This little red daylily was supposed to be ‘Purple Arachne.’ I have no idea what it is. I bought it at the Flower Factory so I suppose I should at least look at the other “P” daylilies in their catalog and see if any match the description. I think this one looks good next to ‘Bill Norris’ so it stays.
This mystery daylily was supposed to be ‘Lake Norman Spider’. Whatever cultivar this is, it performed very well with robust scapes and 6-inch blooms. I like how the color switches from burgundy to purple depending on the amount of light shining on it. And it’s got a very pretty watermark. Apparently I wasn’t meant to have ‘Lake Norman Spider’ this year because when I attempted to buy one a second time, I ended up with yet another mystery daylily! Fool me once…
