My basil has seen better days, but it’s my only casualty from the cold. Madison hit a record low temperature of 32 degrees early this morning. According to my indoor/outdoor thermometer, the coldest it got at my house was 35.5 degrees. I didn’t see any frost or frost damage.
Last evening I was running around outside before sunset trying to decide if I should cut off my peppers and tomatoes. I had 8 unripe tomatoes and 3 bell peppers that I could’ve picked. Most of the tomatoes weren’t quite ready, but I could’ve harvested the peppers. It’s supposed to get into the mid-80s by the middle of next week so I took a gamble. I rescued one pepper and left the rest to fend for themselves. It turned out to be a wise decision.
In northern Wisconsin they weren’t so lucky. Tomahawk had a low of 21 degrees. That will make for a lot of mushy pumpkins!
