Some of my windflowers are still in bloom after six weeks which included many days with rain and/or wind. That’s pretty impressive for plants that come from such tiny bulbs.
Windflowers (Anemone blanda) are little daisy-like flowers in shades of blue, pink and white. These Greek natives grow 4 inches tall with fern-like foliage.
Windflower bulbs are rather strange—they are small and black and look like dried-up pellets. When I first dumped them out of their shipping bag I thought someone had made a mistake. Windflowers are also not particularly hardy (Zones 5-9) or long-lived, but supposedly they will naturalize with offsets if they like their location. I planted mine next to the house on the south side. We had a mild winter, but we also had several cold snaps without snow cover. My bulbs survived just fine.
I’ll find out in the coming years just how long-lived they are, but so far I’m impressed by these cheery, long-blooming spring flowers.
