Earlier in the month I introduced you to one of the new species tulips I’m growing for the first time this year called ‘Lilac Wonder.’ Most tulips and daffodils are finishing up for the season, so I wanted to give ‘Lilac Wonder’ one more shoutout before it disappears until next spring.
I fell head over heels in love with these little lilac-pink beauties. The flowers appeared for almost a full month in all kinds of weather. Even on cloudy days when the flowers stayed closed, they were still gorgeous:
‘Lilac Wonder’ is hardy in Zones 5-9 (although there is some conflicting information about that—some growers insist the cultivar is hardy to Zone 3). My bulbs haven’t been battle tested by a truly severe winter yet, but if the flowers do indeed return year after year as promised, this species tulip will easily become one of my all-time-favorite spring bulbs.
‘Lilac Wonder’ grows 4-7 inches tall and blooms in mid-spring. It makes a great front-of the-border spring plant.
