After 6 years in my garden, my ‘Kentucky’ LA lilies are still going strong. This year they grew about 5 feet tall and bloomed for four weeks starting in late June.
Like Orienpet lilies, LA (longiflorum-Asiatic hybrid) lilies grow taller on sturdier stems each year. ‘Kentucky’ has sherbet-orange flowers with a big splash of maroon speckles. The petals are thick and can withstand wind and heavy rain, and the 8-inch flowers don’t fade in the sun.
‘Kentucky’ is supposed to be hardy in Zones 5-10, but my plants survived the Polar Vortex which managed to wipe out many of my Zone 4 perennials. I’m pretty confident ‘Kentucky’ could survive a Zone 4 winter. If you were unsure you could always mulch the plants in late fall for extra protection.
