Winter was brutal on woody ornamentals in our area. Even our city’s botanical garden estimates it lost several hundred plants.
We have what we think is a mulberry bush that has been growing next to our house for decades. It came with the house at purchase. It died out over the winter except for a few lonely tufts of leaves sticking out of some of the dead-looking branches.
Because this particular shrub is close to our house I get some great photos when birds sit in it to sing or preen. And it’s also where many of them fly for cover when hawks on are the prowl.
Thankfully new shoots are growing from the ground. But until they are of a decent size, we are going to leave our “dead” shrub just as it is so the birds can still use it.
